Video(s) of the Day: Lower Dens

Baltimore’s Lower Dens have a new album (Nootropics) out on May 1st and a tour starting February 29th and have kick-started the promotion with a artsy video that probably didn’t cost a lot to make. Of course, they don’t have a major label telling them they really need to waste money that way. The video fits the vibe of Brains, the first track released, which is a catchy tune that just might grab you the first time you heard it.  Of course, midtempo music in the vein of U2’s “With or Without You” or The XX’s Infinity (build, release, build, release, repeat…no climax) has always been a favorite of mine.  Just call it the tantric sex approach to music.  It’s another song that has you bumping along timelessly just above the clouds with nothing but sun above and clouds below.  Below, enjoy the new video for Brains and a session the band held for NPR Music in 2011.

Behrnsie has a love for music that dare not speak its name. He attends many shows and can often be found counting out the beats for no discernible reason. He played alto saxophone in his middle school jazz band, where he was best known for infuriating his instructor when it was revealed that he played everything by ear, and could not in fact read music. He takes great pride that this is the same talent/affliction that got Tori Amos kicked out of the Peabody Academy. He does not live in his parents’ basement….except during the holidays.
