There’s this great romantic notion of what happens backstage in concerts. Like if you only had access to Mumford & Sons’ dressing room, you could see Marcus working out the next “Little Lion Man” on a mandolin. Or at least see Vince Neil judging an impromptu wet T-shirt contest. Sadly, it usually ain’t so. What you often get backstage is nothing more than band members looking terminally bored while they wait to go on, punctuated–if you’re lucky–by someone misplacing his favorite silk shirt.
This video is the exception to the rule–a spirited run through of “The Weight,” featuring Mavis Staples, Nick Lowe and Wilco, backstage at the Civic Opera House in Chicago last month.
