Video of the Day: Ivan & Alyosha

Having sworn for years that my first male offspring will bear the name “Alexei,” I appreciate references to The Brothers Karamazov. The core four members of Ivan & Alyosha and their ensemble of traveling ‘mates apparently do as well, as the folk-pop combo was inspired by Dostoyevsky’s novel when branding themselves.

Their compositions fit within the rubric of the current zeitgeist, soaring in pursuit of the sublime with slowly building, emotive harmonies that turn into toe-tapping earworms. The Seattleites are touring extensively over the next month and a half, bringing their traveling cavalcade of wives and children along for the experience. From Ivan & Alyosha’s recently-released record entitled All The Times We Had, this is “Running for Cover.”

Behrnsie has a love for music that dare not speak its name. He attends many shows and can often be found counting out the beats for no discernible reason. He played alto saxophone in his middle school jazz band, where he was best known for infuriating his instructor when it was revealed that he played everything by ear, and could not in fact read music. He takes great pride that this is the same talent/affliction that got Tori Amos kicked out of the Peabody Academy. He does not live in his parents’ basement….except during the holidays.
