Video of the Day: Gotye

I’ll readily admit to sleeping on this band for the simple reason that I think their name is horrible.   The video features a palette Helen Frankenthaler would approve of and is truly unique and stark…and the tune itself, which didn’t grab me upon first listen, has definitely grown upon me.

But what’s really blown me away is how many dang hits the thing has. 52 million hits?  For those keeping score, that’s 30 million more hits than the most prominent song from the inescapable Lana Del Rey, “Video Games“.  And, it has already started an internet meme of sorts.

The vocals tiptoe gently and then soar emotively, and once the song opens up are reminiscent of Sting.  Meanwhile, Kimbra‘s poignant assist reminds me of the old Lush tune “Ciao!“, (featuring Pulp‘s Jarvis Cocker on the recording).  But what has most people talking is the lyrics, which are especially poignant in an era where Facebook is being blamed for a massive number of divorces.  Last but certainly not least, this will be added to my burgeoning playlist that highlights the eminence of the xylophone in contemporary indie rock. Lionel Hampton would be proud.

Behrnsie has a love for music that dare not speak its name. He attends many shows and can often be found counting out the beats for no discernible reason. He played alto saxophone in his middle school jazz band, where he was best known for infuriating his instructor when it was revealed that he played everything by ear, and could not in fact read music. He takes great pride that this is the same talent/affliction that got Tori Amos kicked out of the Peabody Academy. He does not live in his parents’ basement….except during the holidays.
