Video of the Day | Bonnaroo Edition: Tom Petty

Yup, it’s still Bonnaroo week for our Videos of the Day. But it’s also Throwback Thursday. And where do those two circles overlap? Right at Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who close out the main stage on Sunday night.

As you may have read here, the boys from Gainesville, FL, have been trading in their greatest hits sets for something a bit more adventurous of late, having taken up residencies at New York’s Beacon Theatre and L.A.’s Fonda Theatre. There, they’ve been focusing on fan-friendly deep tracks and tasty covers. (You also might have heard they just had a Fonda show cut short by the fire marshals.)

If the set by TP and the HB at the Hangout Fest earlier this year is any indication, we can’t expect them to be quite so esoteric in front of the festival audience at Bonnaroo. At Hangout, they trotted out several several crowd pleasers like “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” “I Won’t Back Down” and “Don’t Come Around Here No More.” But they still threw in plenty of choice nuggets like “I Should Have Known It” from Mojo, “Rebels” and covers like the Dead’s “Friend of the Devil” and Muddy Waters’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You.”
