Oh, Canada!

The Great White North has been putting out great music for years, but is finally gaining greater acclaim stateside due to that little thing called the Interweb(s).  In fact, half of my summer mix features Canadian music.  Montreal, in particular, has been a fertile ground for killer indie rock, as bands like Arcade Fire, Metric, and Stars have borne witness. Arcade Fire plays Merriweather Post Pavilion in early August and Stars visit 9:30 Club for back-to-back gigs in late September.

Stars have released another album that CMJ reviewed here, and Metric added a dreampoppy tune to the most recent iteration of that whole Twilight thing that I don’t really understand as a heterosexual male. That said, I’m definitely a charter member of Team Emily.

Behrnsie has a love for music that dare not speak its name. He attends many shows and can often be found counting out the beats for no discernible reason. He played alto saxophone in his middle school jazz band, where he was best known for infuriating his instructor when it was revealed that he played everything by ear, and could not in fact read music. He takes great pride that this is the same talent/affliction that got Tori Amos kicked out of the Peabody Academy. He does not live in his parents’ basement….except during the holidays.
