New Music: Savages

If Karen O fronted Joy Division on a full head of mescaline, you might end up with something akin to the new record from London’s Savages. Possibly the most interesting post-punk band on the scene today, Jehnny Beth‘s magnetic lead vocals and their stirringly strong guitar riffs create an enthralling atmospheric daze. At least for the moment, their tension-laded Matador release Silence Yourself — slated for a May 6th release — is available for streaming. Clear allusions to the aforementioned Joy Division work through those tensions, massaging the tempo upwards until the entire composition explodes into the skies.

It’s not exactly radio friendly — not in the least — but is rewarding for both those who pay it careful attention and those with an appreciation for the variegated soundscapes of art rock.

Behrnsie has a love for music that dare not speak its name. He attends many shows and can often be found counting out the beats for no discernible reason. He played alto saxophone in his middle school jazz band, where he was best known for infuriating his instructor when it was revealed that he played everything by ear, and could not in fact read music. He takes great pride that this is the same talent/affliction that got Tori Amos kicked out of the Peabody Academy. He does not live in his parents’ basement….except during the holidays.
