Video of the Day | Throwback Thursday Edition: Pixies

The Pixies released Surfer Rosa into the wild twenty-five years ago this past week, on March 21, 1988. Clocking in at a brisk 32:50, the album has been cited by numerous musicians as inspiration for hours-worth of legendary albums (See: Nirvana’s Nevermind). Released originally in the U.K. on 4AD Records and recorded in Boston with the still-prolific Steve Albini, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA in 2005, a mere seventeen years after its release and one year after the band reformed after an eleven year interregnum.

“Gigantic” was co-written by Black Francis and Kim Deal, and is one of the group’s few songs featuring Deal on lead vocals. Here’s a July 3, 2004 performance of the song at The Eurockeenes Festival in Belfort, France.

Behrnsie has a love for music that dare not speak its name. He attends many shows and can often be found counting out the beats for no discernible reason. He played alto saxophone in his middle school jazz band, where he was best known for infuriating his instructor when it was revealed that he played everything by ear, and could not in fact read music. He takes great pride that this is the same talent/affliction that got Tori Amos kicked out of the Peabody Academy. He does not live in his parents’ basement….except during the holidays.
