Pearl Jam is back after an extended hiatus, one they apparently used to recharge their musical batteries. The first release off the upcoming October 15th release, Lightning Bolt, is a classic, guitar-driven punk jam interrupted twice by an unnecessary vocal-driven refrain/bridge. It’s one of the best songs they’ve released in years, and the only thing that keeps it from being one of their all-time greats are those vocal-driven interludes that drop the temperature just as the inferno is about to start raging out of control. If only they’d gone straight into the guitar riff/solo, it would be a barn-burner for the generations.
Even so, it’s still a worthy entry into their overall catalogue, and a welcome one at this stage of their career that is sure to be fantastic in a live setting.
