Video of the Day | Governors Ball Edition: Best Coast

There’s something great about a distinctly California band coming to New York City and telling its citizens how much better it is back in Los Angeles. Because, New Yorkers always take kindly to that sort of thing, right? And that’s just what Best Coast will do when they take the stage Friday afternoon at the Governors Ball Music Festival. That, plus doing some push ups and almost certainly telling stories about Bethany Cosentino‘s cat. They always have fun, you know, their catchy and jangly guitar riffs accompanied by wonderfully laconic whimsy. And seriously, how can that not put a smile on your face?

The band’s 2012 album was one of the year’s best, produced by Jon Brion and containing as pure a love letter to the Golden State as has ever been penned. As far as Bethany and Bobb Bruno are concerned, their home state is “The Only Place” to be. Except this weekend, of course, when it’s New York City.

Behrnsie has a love for music that dare not speak its name. He attends many shows and can often be found counting out the beats for no discernible reason. He played alto saxophone in his middle school jazz band, where he was best known for infuriating his instructor when it was revealed that he played everything by ear, and could not in fact read music. He takes great pride that this is the same talent/affliction that got Tori Amos kicked out of the Peabody Academy. He does not live in his parents’ basement….except during the holidays.
